“We’ve Done Our Part. Now, Election Officials Must Do Theirs” — MFOL Statement on Polls Closing
Share
NEW YORK, NY — Today, millions of Americans exercised their constitutional right to vote, including millions of young people and first-time voters. This year, 8 million new young voters were eligible to vote and early data already indicates that youth voter turnout is on track to surpass levels seen in 2020. We showed up, cast our ballots, and performed our civic duty to protect our democracy and fight for our right to live without gun violence. Now, it’s time to let the democratic process play out and give election officials the time they need to count every vote.
While some politicians may try to claim victory prematurely and sow doubt, we know that it will take time to count all the ballots. That is normal, and election officials must be free from intimidation or pressure as they carry out their important work to count each and every ballot. We deserve free and fair elections, and that means that election workers must be protected from harassment and intimidation, including from armed agitators, at ballot counting facilities. Every vote must be counted, and our sacred right to vote must be protected. We’ve seen the far-right’s playbook before and we are watching closely as counting continues, and are prepared to respond accordingly. Young people won’t accept any attempts to subvert the will of the people, and no matter the outcome, we will continue to fight for a future free of gun violence.
