Tabling
What is tabling?
Setting up a booth or table at a community event to share your message and build connections.
Why should I table at an event?
Face-to-face conversations build movements. Every person you talk to is a potential volunteer, gun safety voter, or advocate.
CONVERSatIONS INTO COMMUNITY.
Every movement starts with a table — a few people, a stack of flyers, and a cause worth showing up for.
Tabling is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to grow March For Our Lives. It’s how we find new supporters, welcome new members, and invite young people to organize for change. Some people you meet will sign up through the Action Hub to join MFOL nationally and become part of our broader membership network.
Others will want to take things further by organizing with you locally by joining events, hosting actions, and building community on the ground.
This toolkit will help you show up with confidence, start real conversations, and turn every new connection into part of the movement.
Pick the right space.
Choose events where you’ll meet people who care — or should care — about your issue. Look for:
- Local fairs, parades, or community days
- School or campus events
- Farmers markets and art walks
- Youth summits or civic engagement festivals
Before committing, reach out to organizers to confirm table availability, costs, setup times, and foot traffic. Many events offer free or discounted spots for youth groups and nonprofits.
When in doubt, prioritize connection over crowd size — a small local event can spark deeper conversations than a giant festival.
Gather the materials for your table.
A well-stocked, well-organized table helps people engage easily. Bring:
- A table and chairs (or confirm if provided)
- A tablecloth or banner
- Flyers, postcards, or brochures explaining your mission and current campaigns
- Sign-up sheets or QR codes for joining your email list or the MFOL Action Hub
- Stickers, buttons, or small giveaways — they help start conversations
- Pens, clipboards, tape, and scissors
- Water, snacks, sunscreen, and hand sanitizer for your team
- If you’re highlighting a campaign or bill, bring short, clear talking points and links to take action.
If you need any of these materials, let us know and we will get them to you!
Prepare your team.
Tabling works best when your team feels ready and confident.
- Assign roles: greeter, info sharer, sign-up lead, social media rep, or runner.
- Practice your pitch: everyone should be able to explain your mission in one or two sentences.
- Keep it upbeat: smiles and positive energy draw people in more than signs ever will.
- Plan shifts: rotate roles and breaks to keep everyone energized.
Pro tip: Your table’s tone sets the tone. If your team looks connected and excited, people will want to know what’s going on.
Start real conversations.
When someone walks up, don’t just hand them a flyer — talk to them.
- Greet them warmly:
“Hi! Have you heard of March For Our Lives?”
- Ask questions:
“What brought you to this event?”
“Have you ever been involved in local organizing?”
- Share why you care:
Briefly tell your story or why you’re at the table. Authenticity builds trust.
- Connect their values to yours:
“A lot of people here care about community safety — that’s exactly what we’re fighting for.”
- Invite them to act:
Scan this QR code to sign up or donate, write a message on our pledge wall, or follow us on social media for local actions.
Every conversation should end with an action — even if it’s small.
Make your setup inviting.
Your table should make people want to stop and learn more.
- Use bright visuals — banners, posters, or photos of your team in action.
- Keep materials neat and easy to browse.
- Add interactive elements like a pledge wall, a “Why I Fight for Safety” board, or a trivia spinner.
- Play music (if allowed) to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Small touches — color, movement, and energy — make a huge difference.
Follow up after the event.
What happens after the table is just as important as what happens during it. The goal is to turn interest into action.
1. If someone signed up through the Action Hub:
That’s a win. Their information will automatically be shared with the national MFOL team, so we can add them to our member list and keep them in the loop. You don’t need to re-enter their details — just make sure they scanned or filled it out correctly.
2. If someone wants to organize with you locally:
This is where real community organizing begins. Collect their contact information directly (name, email, phone, and zip code).
Within a few days:
- Send a quick thank-you text or email: “Thanks for stopping by our MFOL table this weekend — so excited you want to organize with us! Let’s connect about what you’d like to work on locally.”
- Invite them to your next event, meeting, or local action.
- Add them to any local group chats, mailing lists, or volunteer updates.
3. Reflect and plan ahead:
Look at who you met, what worked, and what could improve next time. Tabling gets better each time you do it — especially when you keep people connected and build from each event.
Greeting:
“Hey! We’re March For Our Lives — a youth-led movement working to end gun violence and build safer communities. Have you heard about our work?”
If yes:
“That’s awesome! We’re organizing around [specific campaign or local issue] right now. Want to sign up to get involved?”
If no:
“No problem! We’re young people taking action — from voter registration to policy advocacy — to make our communities safer. Here’s how you can plug in.”
Action ask:
“Can I get your name and email so we can send you updates on local actions and events?”
KEEP BUILDING THE MOVEMENT.
Tabling might seem small, but it’s one of the most powerful tools we have to grow our movement. When you show up with energy and purpose, you’re not just representing March For Our Lives — you’re helping expand it.
The goal isn’t to fill a clipboard. It’s to build real relationships that last beyond the event.
See below for resources you can print out for your table, including a sign-up sheet template, an informational flyer about MFOL, and a donation QR code.
What Happens Now?
Congratulations on tabling at an event, let us know how it went! (we love when you share pics!)
