The Current ⚡️April 2024

Join the efforts to pass the People’s Response Act

It’s an election year. Some politicians will ask for our vote– then turn their back on us for gun lobby $$. Gun violence is the #1 cause of death for young people in this country, outpacing cancer and car crashes. Our message to elected officials– champion our agenda or face defeat in November.

Across race, class, and gender, most believe in a future where safety and freedom come from our communities— not the barrel of a gun.

But today, an emboldened gun lobby and their death-dealers on Capitol Hill are hell-bent on the culture of gun violence— to sell more firearms, enforce their hateful ideology, and shut us out of the political process.

That is why we’re asking you to do something that we typically dont ask. We’re asking you to visit your local congressional office and share our legislative vision directly with those in power.

We’ve seen time and time again that when our movement shows up, we’re more powerful than those who want to see us powerless.

STUDENT SOLIDARITY: VANDERBILT DIVEST COALITION

Ezri Tyler, National Organizer

A year ago, Ezri stood with thousands of Tennesseean students who walked out demanding better from their representatives and to be heard after a mass shooting stole six lives and upended the Nashville community. Now, she and other students at Vanderbilt University are engaged in a prolonged fight against Vanderbilt University’s complicity in the ongoing genocide in Gaza. For the last month, Ezri and her fellow students have protested their administration after the university canceled a student referendum that would ensure student government funds did not go towards companies that aid in the genocide in Gaza. The protest included a 155-hour sit-in at the Chancellor’s office that saw students evicted from their dorms, suspended, and expelled for peacefully protesting. The Vanderbilt Gaza Solidarity Encampment, taking place outside the Chancellor’s office, has been ongoing since March 26. It has now spread to other campuses nationwide as students across the country demand that their institutions divest from companies that are complicit in genocide.

Young people, MFOL members, overwhelmingly support a lasting ceasefire in Gaza in our fight for a world free from gun violence. Right now, those who are profiteering from war, guided by the same far-right faction who profit from violence in our classrooms and communities at home, are suiting up with SWAT gear and rifles to silence and intimidate us. In the past weeks, young people have pressured the Biden administration, our leaders in Congress, and university boards to divest from the genocide, provide humanitarian aid to those in Gaza, and call for a lasting ceasefire.

We’re proud of MFOL members and students across the country who are standing up for a world free from gun violence in all of its forms- from militarized campus police to the war machine, fueled by our leaders, that has taken the lives of 30,000+ Palestinians. We’re committed to fighting against fascism, armed supremacy, and state violence in all of its forms and against all of its enablers-  we stand in solidarity with groups organizing for a lasting ceasefire.
