One Year of The Current – A note from Nico
The newsletter is turning one! Curating it has been such a pleasure, and I can’t wait for what’s next. In this special edition of the Current, you will find some of my favorite features from the past year. From bios of our staff to stories from our movement leaders to info on our solidarity work, you’ll see why I joined the movement to end gun violence and why you should.
It’s been quite a year for March For Our Lives!
We started by aligning our base and values for the 2024 election season. Our staff has been working around the clock to prepare for this election season, ensuring that we beat back far-right extremism at the ballot box. Additionally– we’re working to elect the historic Harris-Walz administration, which will bring us closer to a world free from gun violence. If you’re interested in joining our fight– sign up for our phone bank on September 3rd!
Our favorite features from the last year
1. APRIL 2024 – STUDENT SOLIDARITY: VANDERBILT DIVEST COALITION
We’re proud of MFOL members and students across the country who have stood up for a world free from gun violence in all of its forms- from militarized campus police to the war machine, fueled by our leaders, that has taken the lives of 30,000+ Palestinians. We’re committed to fighting against fascism, armed supremacy, and state violence in all of its forms and against all of its enablers- we stand in solidarity with groups organizing for a lasting ceasefire.
2. JUNE 2024 – A NOTE FROM ELENA, SENIOR POLICY ASSOCIATE
Hi everyone!! I am Elena Perez, the Senior Policy Associate (& a federal lobbyist) with March For Our Lives! In this role, I help advise on and oversee efforts that are a part of our federal policy goals. This can be in various forms, from working with coalitions, collaborating across teams in our organization to help inform how to organize or talk about our priority legislation, building relationships & communicating with members of Congress, co-create our policy strategy, and develop opportunities for other young people to get involved.
3. JULY 2024 – A NOTE FROM KAI, DISCORD LEAD
I’m Kai, a rising high school junior in Knoxville, Tennessee! I’m also part of the Welcome Team and the Discord Team lead! I got involved with March For Our Lives for two main reasons. One of those reasons was to help build a better world for my four younger siblings. The middle school I attended (two of my siblings are currently in) was the opposite of a safe space. The atmosphere was consistently painted with violent tension.
Six Years of March For Our Lives
We are growing and sustaining a movement
In 2018, David was in Parkland, FL, planning the big march. In 2019, Jordan was building a statewide team in Phoenix, AZ. Trevor transformed our organizing while the world went under lockdown. In 2021, Ariel built programs that fueled our communities, and in 2022, Matthew organized as we marched again. Last year, Ashton joined the fight in Denver, CO.
Since its founding in 2018, March For Our Lives has transformed into a nationwide movement fueled by young people. Over the past six years, thousands of young people have been propelled into action. We’ve marched, rallied, and demanded a world free from gun violence while politicians sat idly by. We’ve found ourselves in a world in which it is impossible, in fact, immoral, to sit by and watch tragedy after tragedy occur, with the same cycle of condolences and mock outrage. Through our stories and others, March For Our Lives lives and breathes the struggle for a better world for all of us.
Upcoming in the Movement
08/27-08/28/24 – Join an August Recess Action
The Democratic Convention this week showed us that young people and our movement have real power. We shaped the agenda; now, let’s make it real. Meet your lawmaker in these critical 14 days while they’re back in your district – before a historic Get-Out-The-Vote push.
09/03/2024 – Phonebank Michigan Voters
From the school board to the White House, we can wield power against far-right extremists aligned with the National Rifle Association and Project 2025.
We’ve seen throughout history that when young people come together across movements, we WIN.
We’ve contacted millions of young, first-time voters about our strategy and plan to win. We’re setting our biggest voter contact goals this year but need your help.
