March For Our Lives Slams Congressional Republicans for Prioritizing Gun Lobby with Push to Eliminate Silencer Tax

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 14, 2025 — Today, March for Our Lives strongly condemned Congressional Republicans’ latest proposal to eliminate the federal tax on gun silencers — a critical safety measure that has protected communities for 90 years. This $1.5 billion giveaway to gun manufacturers comes just weeks after the Trump Administration slashed $169 million from Community Violence Intervention programs — a one-two punch that makes their priorities clear: corporate profits over student lives.

The provision, buried in broader tax legislation being marked up by the House Ways and Means Committee today, would make it cheaper and easier to obtain devices specifically designed to mask the sound of gunfire — directly undermining public safety and law enforcement response capabilities.

March for Our Lives Executive Director Jackie Corin said:

“This effort has nothing to do with protecting the public and everything to do with dismantling a nearly century-old safeguard in service of gun industry interests. At a time when gun violence is the leading cause of death for American kids and teens, Congress should be investing in solutions that save lives, not delivering favors to the gun lobby.

Silencers make it harder for communities and law enforcement to detect gunfire. Getting rid of this tax while simultaneously defunding programs that prevent violence shows exactly where Congressional Republicans’ priorities lie: with the gun industry, and not the American people. We won’t be silent while politicians sell out our safety.

Every member of Congress voting for this provision is telling young Americans that our lives are worth less than gun manufacturer profits. We’re the generation that grew up in lockdown drills. We’re the largest voting bloc in America. And we will not forget who valued donations over our lives.”

March for Our Lives calls on all members of Congress to reject this dangerous proposal and instead prioritize gun safety measures that protect our communities.
