March For Our Lives Executive Director Jaclyn Corin issued the following statement after reports emerged that Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was shot and killed by her husband:
“We are heartbroken and outraged by the death of Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, who was reportedly killed in an act of domestic violence. This devastating tragedy comes just months after her brother, Donovan Joshua Leigh Metayer, a fellow survivor of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting, passed away.
“Yesterday’s incident forces us to confront the full scope of the gun violence epidemic in this nation. In eight years, this family has been shattered by gun violence twice. Once, by a mass shooting, and now by an act of intimate partner violence turned deadly because of the presence of a firearm.
“We also have to name what is too often ignored. The Vice Mayor and her brother come from a proud, Black immigrant family. Across the country, Black people and other marginalized groups are forced to carry the burden of gun violence in a way those more privileged cannot even fathom. We cannot let this reality remain our status quo.
“Our hearts go out to the Metayer family and all those who are impacted by this unimaginable loss.
“We deserve better than to live with the threat of gun violence hanging over our heads, and we’re going to fight for it.”
