Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed a brief yesterday backing the NRA’s push to dismantle Florida’s post-Parkland gun reform restricting the sale of rifle and long gun to those under 21

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 21, 2025 — Yesterday, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court arguing that his own state’s law restricting firearm purchases by adults under 21 is unconstitutional. The brief supports the National Rifle Association’s effort to overturn a key provision of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, which bans rifle and long gun purchases by adults under the age of 21. The bill was originally passed after the horrific shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which killed 17 students and staff members in 2018.

March for Our Lives Executive Director and Parkland survivor Jackie Corin said:

“Attorney General Uthmeier’s office exists to defend state laws, but yesterday, he committed an act of stunning betrayal against the people of Florida. By bucking precedent and using the power of his position to pander to the gun lobby, AG Uthmeier is going against Florida legislators and the public. It’s a shocking reversal and a clear signal that — like too many in power — Uthmeier is happy to arm the next school shooter if it means keeping special interests happy.

Florida passed this law with bipartisan support after one of the darkest days in our state’s memory. Now our own Attorney General is teaming up with the NRA to tear it down. This move is a slap in the face to survivors and reversing this policy would be a massive step backwards for Florida.

Floridians deserve better than a chief law enforcement officer who sides with the gun lobby over his own state’s children.”
