White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention

Setting a powerful example for leaders across the country.

After four years of concerted pressure and advocacy from March For Our Lives youth activists, President Biden established the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention in September 2023. The first of its kind at the federal level, this office marshals a whole-of-government approach to preventing gun violence. Where the Second Amendment was once a third-rail issue in politics, gun safety is now a top priority at the White House. The Office of Gun Violence Prevention sets a powerful example for leaders across the country.

March For Our Lives was the first national gun violence prevention group to call for an Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Even after we were told we shouldn’t bother fighting for it, we persisted. Through public pressure and creative approaches, young people and survivors secured a key demand of the White House: to throw everything we have at the crisis of gun violence.

This is a victory for young people and the movement. We’ve called for this office for years because we know it has the power to save lives.

Led by our friends and fellow activists Greg Jackson, formerly the Executive Director of Community Action Justice Fund, Stefanie Feldman, and Rob Wilcox, and overseen by Vice President Kamala Harris, the office has already hit the ground running.

The Office of Gun Violence Prevention is already making an impact:

Young people ignited a paradigm shift in American politics, and the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention is proof of that. This is a major victory, but our work isn’t over. That’s why we continue to push the administration for policies that protect our lives — *ahem* like appointing a Director of Youth Engagement and increasing funding to research and community-based violence intervention programs.
