Trump’s Speech was Boring, but His Vision is Terrifying

Even the greatest makeover in politics still won’t pull one over on the American people.

MILWAUKEE, WI — Tonight, in an absurdly boring and meandering speech, former President Trump accepted the Republican nomination for President and failed to mention any type of gun safety reform and offered a vision that directly attacks our future as young people. During his remarks, Trump discussed the frightening attempt on his life. He shared what far too many Americans know: surviving a shooting is a traumatic experience “too painful to tell.” Despite this harrowing story—and while he talked big about “safety” in America—he offered no actual plan or policies to stem gun violence, the leading cause of death for children in America.

Trump on stage tonight was the same Trump we’ve known from day one. During his presidency, he not only stood by while gun violence soared to become the #1 cause of death for children, but he repeatedly bowed down to the NRA and embraced their agenda, and he’s vowed to do the same if re-elected. Today’s speech shows that even after Trump was shot himself, he has no interest in protecting our communities, our future, or our lives, even though a majority of Americans, including many in his own party, support common-sense gun reform. Money must speak louder than words.

Trump’s halfhearted claims to be “President for all of America, not half of America,” moments after coming on to the stage to chants of “fight, fight, fight,” fall flat on a country that knows Trump for his divisive actions. From bragging about deporting immigrants, referring to his opponents as vermin, inciting an insurrection, mocking acts of political violence against other elected officials, and even expressing support for his former Vice President to be hanged—time and again, Trump has shown us who he is. And we must believe him.

Americans aren’t stupid—we remember what he did and know who he is.
