OUR LETTER TO THE NYAG

Since March For Our Lives was started in February of 2018, we have called out the corruption in our political system that allows nearly 40,000 Americans to die from gun violence every year. The root of this corruption is the NRA.

We called out the NRA at the CNN town hall following the Valentine’s Day massacre at our school. We fought back against the lies and conspiracy theories they fueled about us as “crisis actors.” We successfully boycotted the NRA’s corporate partners. We shut down the street in front of NRA headquarters for a huge student-led protest.

But behind the scenes, and thanks to the donations from our supporters, we were looking into the NRA’s finances. On November 19, 2018, the law firm Loeb & Loeb, on behalf of March For Our Lives, submitted a letter to then acting New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood regarding potentially illegal activity by the National Rifle Association.

In summary, the letter provides information that “suggests a long-standing pattern of significant governance lapses at the NRA, including a pattern of related-party financial transactions over a period of years that appears to have enriched friends and relatives of key personnel in the NRA, including the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice President of the NRA, Wayne LaPierre, and his wife.”

The letter shows patterns of governance disputes, misreporting of lobbying activities, contradictory sworn statements, unreported NRA lobbying by an outside organization, failures to report and/or conflicting reports of political activity at federal and state-level, and more. Investigative reporters have recently uncovered additional stunning examples of likely diversions.
