MFOL Reacts to Trump’s Inauguration and Dark Message

“Today, the fight for our lives gets harder, but it doesn’t stop. President Trump painted a dark vision for America in his inaugural speech, one where a very few stand to thrive and flourish  on the backs of the many who languish and suffer. But we refuse to give in to despair and despondency. We’ve been here before. March For Our Lives was founded in the shadow of the first Trump administration, and if there’s one thing we know how to do, it’s fight Trump. Young people across the country believe too deeply in the promise of our futures to stand down—the promise that we can build a world that is safer, more just, and free from the terror of ever-lurking gun violence.

“The last four years have seen us finally starting to turn the tide against gun violence. Gun violence is declining dramatically across the country, and massive investments from ARPA and the historic Bipartisan Safer Communities Act have directed billions of dollars  towards evidence-based solutions that interrupt the cycle of violence long before someone picks up a gun,” said Natalie Fall, Executive Director of March For Our Lives. “These are real lives saved, real families kept whole, and real children whose futures weren’t stolen. We will continue to feel the impact of these laws, and lives will be saved because of them, since BSCA secured long term funding for evidence-based programs. We will fight any attempt from the Trump administration to dismantle or water down these laws.”

It’s true that the odds are stacked against us, but young people have done what they told us was “impossible” before. We have a right to a future where we are truly free; where gun violence is no longer the leading cause of death for American children; where Black Lives Matter; where we all have the right to bodily autonomy; where our queer and trans siblings are liberated; where immigrants are celebrated as the foundation of America; where the few don’t get to profit off the suffering of the many.  We will fight for that future.

We rose up in masses under the first Trump administration and won lifesaving gun safety action against all odds, even in our home state of Florida. We will do it again because we know that we can, and because our lives depend on it. Trump made a promise on the campaign trail. A promise to be the failing NRA’s “best friend” and to stand in the way of common sense gun safety laws—a promise that will undoubtedly lead to more people dying by gun. We take him at his word and will fight him at every step of the way. Trump may be dangerous, but he has a powerful enemy in America’s young people. We will keep on marching for our lives.”
