March For Our Lives Executive Director Jaclyn Corin released the following statement after eight children were shot and killed and two women were injured in a domestic violence-related mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana.
“The news out of Shreveport is devastating beyond words. Eight children had their lives stolen by a gunman before they had a chance to begin fully. This tragedy is a direct example of America’s moral emergency.”
“This tragedy, now being described as one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent times, comes on the heels of multiple high-profile shootings where Black women were shot and killed in incidents of gun-related domestic violence. Taken together, these cases underscore a truth this country refuses to face head-on: Black Americans are carrying an outsized and relentless burden in the gun violence crisis.
“From children like those killed in Shreveport, to Black women facing lethal domestic violence, to families living with daily exposure to shootings that never make national news, the toll is staggering and systemic. This is what a public health crisis looks like when it is allowed to persist in Black communities.
“March For Our Lives stands with families in Shreveport and with every family navigating the trauma that is gun violence. We owe these children more than grief. We owe them urgency and change.”
